Poor digestion is a fast growing concern in the UK and cause havoc on your days.
It can make you not want to leave your house, it can keep you from eating your favourite foods, or even worse... It can even keep you from making memories with your loved ones.
But that doesn't have to be the case anymore.
After you read this short article, you'll be able to improve your digestion with just a few simple changes so you can go back to living your life, making memories with your family, and eating some delicious foods without suffering for it later!
So, let's get started.
Our bodies love movement!
When we move our body it helps mobilise our organs and essential fluids, from our lymphatic system circulating immune cells, to the synovial fluid that protects and nourishes our joints.
One of the most overlooked areas of movement is how it impacts our digestion. From the moment we start chewing and swallow our food, digestive movement begins. Food starts it's long journey through our GI (Gastrointestinal) tract, and it doesn't stop moving until we’ve finished digesting the food and taken the nutrients we need.
Now, even though our digestive system has the ability to contract and move food through its long winding tubes, this puts more stress on our digestion and can cause painful problems such as bloating, gas and heartburn as digestion slows.
Today we’re going to look at two simple ways you can start using movement today to boost and support your digestion.
Let's start with the easiest first.
Our diaphragm is a large fan shaped muscle that attaches to our lower ribs. When it contracts it draws the base of our lungs down into our abdomen causing them to fill with air.
When we breath correctly, every inwards breath has a gentle massaging effect on our digestive organs and helps move food along our digestive tract as well as stimulating blood flow and digestive juices.
When we’re stressed or rushing around we tend to take shallower breaths using our upper back muscles instead of our diaphragm.
This not only reduces the massaging effect on our digestive system, it also limits your body from entering its Parasympathetic ‘rest and digest’ state and keeps it in a Sympathetic ‘fight or flight’ state, which also negatively affects digestion.
Thankfully this is an easy fix and can have noticeable results the first time you try it.
To check you are belly breathing correctly, place one hand on your tummy and one hand on your chest. Start slowly breathing in through your nose focusing on expanding your tummy as you breathe in, and drawing your tummy in as you breathe out.
You should feel very little movement coming from the hand on your chest, and a lot of movement from your tummy.
It can take a while for this to feel normal, but when you make this a habit with every meal you will soon find you don't even need to think about it, and your gut will thank you.
Have you ever had a big meal on a Sunday and fallen asleep on the sofa, only to wake up an hour later feeling like nothing has happened and the food is still sitting in your stomach?
Going for a walk after eating promotes movement through your entire digestive system and helps to speed up digestion and reduce bloating. In the same way as belly breathing, it also helps with blood flow and the secretion of digestive juices as well as promoting the release of good mood hormones.
Studies have also shown even just a few minutes of walking after a meal helps reduce blood sugar spikes and insulin insensitivity which is a cause of conditions like type 2 diabetes. It can also help maintain sustained energy for longer periods and prevent post-meal energy slumps.
If the weather isn't great and you can't walk outside. Moving around indoors can have a similar effect, even if it’s just walking on the spot or doing a few laps around the house.
